14 March 2026
The project for the construction of the National Multiprofile Hospital for Active Treatment of Children continued to evolve with new specific steps in February 2026. Key highlights include a proposal to supplement the concept of the future medical facility, securing additional options regarding the project's property base, and progress in preparing the necessary infrastructure.
As a result of consultations and written opinions from leading medical specialists and members of Expert Councils at the Ministry of Health, a proposal was submitted to the principal to expand the structure of the future hospital. The proposal envisions the creation of an independent Department/Clinic for Skin and Venereal Diseases with 5 beds for active hospital treatment, providing specialized diagnostics and treatment for pediatric dermatological conditions. Additionally, a dental module is planned for the outpatient consultation area to provide dental care for children requiring highly specialized treatment or anesthesia, in collaboration with Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
A significant step toward ensuring additional opportunities for the future development and upgrading of the project was taken with Decision No. 197 of February 18, 2026, by the Council of Ministers. This decision approves the transfer of properties from the so-called Prosthetics Center as a non-monetary contribution to the capital of "Health Investment Company for Children's Hospital". This creates a stable resource base for the future realization of the project and the possibility of establishing a scientific research and development center.
Progress has also been achieved regarding the energy infrastructure of the future facility. Meetings were held to discuss the technical parameters for constructing a new substation to ensure the hospital's power supply. Written requests and opinions have been submitted to the competent authorities to initiate the procedure for a Detailed Urban Plan to designate a site for the facility.
In February, another coordination meeting of an inter-institutional working group was held with representatives from the Road Infrastructure Agency , Sofia Municipality, and the Ministry of Regional Development. Information was exchanged regarding the scope of the future Sofia Ring Road as it pertains to the medical facility.
Concurrently, over recent months, discussions were held with the management of medical facilities that include pediatric clinics and departments. The goal was to familiarize pediatric structures with the capacity plan of the future national hospital and provide information on its current status and short-term steps. These meetings resulted in expressed support from the pediatric community and a readiness to assist the project with expertise and experience.
The company continues to maintain high standards of financial management and transparency. An independent financial audit confirmed that the company's annual financial report for 2025 presents a true and fair view of its financial position, noting a positive financial result for the period. Work on the National Children's Hospital project continues with a focus on accelerating administrative procedures and preparing for the next key stages of one of the country's most significant health projects.
